Prescriptions can take up to 3 working days to process.
You can order your prescription up to 10 days before it is due. If you require your prescription early for any reason (for example: if you are going on holiday), please provide these details with your repeat prescription request. We are unable to process early prescription requests without this information. We DO NOT accept prescription requests via email or by telephone unless you have been coded as clinically housebound by a GP.
Ordering repeat prescriptions
If you are already registered for SystmOnline, access your account here.
The easiest ways to order repeat prescriptions are:
- using your NHS account (through the NHS website or in the NHS App)
- using the GP online system: SystemOnline
These accounts show you all your repeat medicine and dosage and you can choose the ones you need.
You can also:
- fill out a repeat prescriptions request form
- bring the paper form to the surgery, Monday to Friday from 8:30am to 6.30pm
We do not take repeat prescription requests over the phone or email.
Repeat Prescriptions
You can request your repeat medication by indicating the items you require on the tear-off slip of your prescription and handing it in at the practice prescription box.
Alternatively, you can order your repeat prescription online via the top of this page.
Please allow 72 working hours for prescriptions to be processed.
Collecting your prescription
You can usually collect your prescription from the pharmacy 3 to 5 working days after you have ordered it.
You will need to choose a pharmacy to collect your prescription from. We call this nominating a pharmacy.
You can change your nominated pharmacy at any time:
- on the app or website where you order repeat prescriptions
- at your GP practice
- at any pharmacy that accepts repeat prescriptions
Questions about your prescription
If you have questions about your medicine, your local pharmacists can answer these. They can also answer questions on medicines you can buy without a prescription.
The NHS website has information on how your medicine works, how and when to take it, possible side effects and answers to your common questions.

Medication Reviews
If you are due a medication review you can still request your medication. If you are ordering online it might not allow you to tick your repeat items but you can create a custom request using the free text box below your repeat list. If you type in the items you are needing this will get sent through to our prescriptions team who will then send a message to a GP. You do not need to book an appointment unless told to do so by either a GP, Nurse or Pharmacist.

Our Keyworth Surgery is a Dispensing Sites
Your GP or nurse will not generally give you a prescription for certain medicines that are available to buy in a pharmacy or supermarket even if you qualify for free prescriptions. This is part of the NHS plan to reduce the amount of money spent by the NHS on medicines that can be bought over the counter.
About pharmacists
As qualified healthcare professionals, pharmacists can offer advice on minor illnesses such as:
- coughs
- colds
- sore throats
- tummy trouble
- aches and pains
They can also advise on medicine that you can buy without a prescription.
Many pharmacies are open until late and at weekends. You do not need an appointment.
Most pharmacies have a private consultation room where you can discuss issues with pharmacy staff without being overheard.
Prescription Fees and Help With NHS Costs
The NHS prescription charge is currently £9.65 for each prescribed item, which means that there is a charge for each different drug or medical appliance on your prescription. Support stockings are charged per stocking.
In England, around 90% of prescription items are dispensed free. This includes exemptions from charging for those on low incomes, such as:
- those on specific benefits or through the NHS Low Income Scheme
- those who are age exempt
- those with certain medical conditions

Non-urgent advice: Save Money On NHS Prescription Charges
Prescription (per item): £9.90
12-month prepayment certificate (PPC): £111.60
3-month PPC: £31.25
HRT PPC- £19.30
If you will have to pay for four or more prescription items in three months or more than 14 items in 12 months, you may find it cheaper to buy a PPC.

HRT Prescription Prepayment Certificate
The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) (21st February 2023) announced that patients in England will be able to access cheaper Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) for menopause through a new Hormone Replacement Therapy prescription prepayment certificate (HRT PPC).
From 1st April 2023, patients who usually pay for their HRT prescriptions will be able to purchase an annual HRT PPC for the cost of two single prescription charges. The HRT PPC, valid for 12 months only covers Oestrogen and Progesterone only it does not yet cover Testosterone. It is similar to the current medicines pre-payment certificate but it will only cost £19.30 for a years supply of HRT as opposed to the £111.60 that the general prepayment certificate (which covers all medication) costs.
